Saudi’s Swift Response to COVID-19

Saudi has taken Covid-19 seriously from the start. They reacted quickly by closing their borders, suspending all flights and implementing a nationwide curfew that reduced travel between cities. All this happened when their number of cases was still low.

Over the past 3 months we’ve experienced a variety of curfews and restrictions, usually with less than a day’s notice to prepare. We’re thankful for the way the country has handled everything, but of course it’s frustrating to be forced to stay in your home – especially without solid end dates in sight.

Masks aren’t an option here like they seem to be in the US. If you’re not wearing a mask in public, you’re liable for a $250 fine, and stores will not let you in. If you violate curfew, be ready to cough up $2500. 😳 Usually small kids and babies don’t have to mask up, but today I wasn’t allowed in a mall until they were wearing them. Luckily I had extras and the boys were good sports about it. 😷

Yesterday, the country finally “opened up” and curfews were lifted. Businesses, including restaurants, gyms and salons could welcome customers again. Domestic flights have resumed but international travel remains suspended. And social distancing and masks are still required. We’re excited for the new freedom, grateful that we’ve stayed healthy throughout the chaos, and also being realistically cautious about venturing out..
