Jeddah’s Record-Breaking Fountain

Jeddah is slated to have the world’s tallest building (currently under construction) but while we wait for it to rise above the Burj Khalifa, at least Jeddah continues to have the honor of world’s tallest fountain. It’s a title they’ve held for almost 35 years since King Fahd donated the landmark (water mark?) to the city.
::
The fountain shoots up over 850 feet above the Red Sea (that’s approximately as tall as an 80-story building 😳) at a force of 230 mph and can be seen from most rooftops in the city (Wikipedia). We can easily see it from our apartment and it’s at least 7 miles away!
::
When the wind is too strong, they’ll turn the fountain off because the water gets blown onto land. 💦 The district around the fountain is a more posh area with fine dining establishments promoting “dinner with a view” and luxury hotels, including the massive seaside Ritz Carlton.
::
I used to think the fountain was tacky and excessive, but it has grown on me. I have to admit I’ve never seen anything like it – the wall of cascading water is especially beautiful against the backdrop of the setting sun and when it’s illuminated at night. 🌙
