I’m Not Fancy Enough for Saudi Salons

“Beenefsijee? Beenefsijee?! (Arabic for ‘purple’) Crazy, crazy…” The ladies at the salon were clearly not used to bold color jobs and they weren’t afraid to share their opinions. 😅

When I get bored and need change, my hair is the first victim. It adds a whole layer of excitement when the person wielding scissors and color dye doesn’t speak English – which is why I always come prepared with photos and Google translate.

This day (this photo is a year old) I went to a new salon simply for their cheap prices. They even gave me an extra discount because my hair turned out more pink than purple. And when I tried to tip my stylist she pushed it back at me and laughed in my face 🤔 (I later confirmed that tipping for salon services isn’t the norm).

There are a plethora of luxurious, expensive salons and spas here but I always feel out of place in those atmospheres and guilty for spending too much $. People really pay a premium for beauty services in this country. Arab women are so naturally beautiful but they also really love their makeup, and cosmetic surgery and other enhancements are shockingly trendy among young people – tummy tucks, hair implants, fillers, etc.

None of that for me please! I’ll just take my crazy purple streaks. They go great with my thin lips and chipped nails. 😆
