Saudi homes are typically tiled (cooler and easier to clean up the dust), and fully carpeted rooms are rare, so rugs have center stage. There are plenty of shops selling oriental and modern patterned rugs that are factory made and a dime a dozen (give or take a few hundred bucks). But my favorite shop is in the Afghan souq in the southern, “old” part of town. It’s not the kind of place that has an Instagram, let alone a website, and we only happened upon it among the winding streets bc of a walking tour we signed up for on a sleepy Saturday.

As you can see in the pic, the shop is fully stocked floor to ceiling with vibrant, one-of-a-kind, handwoven rugs from Afghanistan, Iran, Turkey, and more. I could spend hours eyeballing the rich color combinations and running my hands over the varied textures. The rugs are more affordable than what we could get in the US and they last for generations. I consider them a worthy investment.
