I love a good book nook. This spot in our house feels cozy and familiar and is the perfect place to wind down in the evening.

Books have always been an escape for me but they are an especially great coping mechanism for frustrations here. I try to always have one in the car or my purse. The store is shut for prayer time? My students didn’t show up for class? The doctor is 45 minutes late? No problem. This is also why I loved the DMV waiting room – guilt-free, uninterrupted time to have my nose in a book.

There isn’t a public library system in Jeddah and it’s something I sorely miss, for myself and my kids. I grew up going to “story time,” participating in summer reading challenges, and incessantly scrounging for loose change to pay overdue fines. Ah the good ole days.
