I know it sounds a little strange but IKEA has become something like a sanctuary for me here.

It’s the place where I go to combat homesickness. I’m not Swedish so I’m not really sure why it works, but it instantly feels comfortable when I’m there. Maybe because the employees all speak English quite well, there’s no price bargaining involved, and it’s clean and orderly. Basically it’s a well-air-conditioned escape from the chaos and grit of the city.

IKEA visits have always been a treat though, even in the US. I remember when one finally opened in Ohio in 2008 we took a three hour road trip just to walk the aisles. I didn’t even buy anything.

Since moving here I’ve logged enough hours building IKEA furniture to become a part-time employee. 😄 I’ve also eaten more than my fair share of meatballs and lingonberry jam. 🙈🍽
