Walking Along the Red Sea: the Jeddah Corniche

The Jeddah Corniche is a magical place. It’s a 4.5 km promenade/recreation area that winds along the coast of the Red Sea. There are spacious walkways, gardens, playgrounds, fountains, sculptures and the occasional mosque. A few sandy beach areas welcome swimmers (mostly men and children) and concession kiosks dot the walkway. 🏝🌺☀️

This revamped version of the waterfront debuted in 2017, right after we arrived. It’s the cleanest, most well-maintained part of the city and my go-to spot when I need to feel refreshed.

We like to grab a sugary Moroccan tea at a kiosk and meander along the paths, people watching and breathing in the salty sea air. When evening hits, the open areas are full of families picnicking, hawkers selling their wares, and children recklessly careening their bikes through the crowds. It’s a prime meeting spot for family gatherings, exercise seekers, and tourists.

When I’m standing at the fence, staring out at the hazy orange sun as it sets, listening to the purr of the waves beneath me, I almost forget the dust, pollution, and traffic of the city behind me. I feel like I could easily be in Dubai or Miami (sans the bikinis and tropical cocktails).

The Corniche has been closed to everyone throughout the curfew/lockdown periods and we’re anxiously awaiting until we can resume our revitalizing walks by the sea! 🌊
